In Kansas City, the state line can change your tax bill in retirement. Kansas exempts federal retirement benefits, and Missouri caps its public-pension deduction. We help KC-area feds by phone or video and have no local office.
Federal employers in the area
OPM's August 2026 workforce data shows 14,647 federal civilians on duty in the Kansas City metro[19]. That count leaves out employees whose metro OPM does not publish, mainly security agencies such as most of DoD[20], so the real number is higher. The IRS is the largest (3,829), followed by the Veterans Health Administration (3,430), the Social Security Administration (1,419) and the FAA (797)[19].
Who to call about your benefits
Talk to your agency HR office while you're working. Retirees call OPM at 1-888-767-6738[3]. For Social Security questions, find your nearest SSA office with SSA's official locator[21]; we don't list addresses here because offices move.
State tax on your FERS annuity
- Kansas: Federal Civil Service Retirement or Disability Fund payments and other retirement benefits from federal employment, including Thrift Savings Plans, are exempt from Kansas income tax. You list them as exempt retirement benefits on Schedule S[34].
- Missouri: You can deduct a public pension, including a federal one, up to the maximum Social Security benefit. For 2025 that is $47,633 per taxpayer[33].
Cost of living
BEA puts the 2024 price level for the Kansas City metro at 92.5, where 100 is the U.S. average[1]. That's about 7.5% below the national average.
